WHO'S STANDING ON IT
Any leader who dares to try to elevate the political/policy discussion; who suggests that reform is not only needed but possible; who asks us to elevate our sights and, OMG, even our conduct, challenges some powerful forces.
Whether it's by core inclination, by political strategy, or both, President Barack Hussein (yes) Obama seems able to survive on the rarified air up there on Olympus. Not so, many of the people he's called upon to help him lead.
Republican Senator Judd Gregg for Commerce secretary is the latest appointment that is not to be, withdrawing not for lobbying by any other name or unpaid taxes, but because of policy differences.
The reliably slimy, utterly shameless Republicans (don't get me started) have seized upon each departure as indication of the president's early defeat only weeks after taking office.
Those sympathetic to this possibility will of course embrace the Republicans' spin. But I think their rejection of Obama's attempt to be reasonable and conciliatory will backfire, making these intellectual midgets look like the buffoons, liars, hypocrites and cynics they are.
Have a nice day.
