I admit it; I punked out. I declined the invitation with thanks. So, no, I won't be going on that 32-mile trek around the edge of Manhattan. Once I saw the details, I realized it was more rigorous than I'm ready for. Maybe I'll be ready in time, but that time isn't now.
Thanks, Bob. I admit I felt guilty at first about declining. And that's because so often, I've gone much farther than I expected to, with no ill effects. Why would this time be any different?
But the proposed walk was 20 miles longer than I'd ever walked before. And because of the schedule, it would have meant getting up at 3:30 or 4 a.m. Not an auspicious beginning, I thought, for such a demanding excursion.
I think I'll do it in increments. Last time, I did the Battery to the Washington Bridge in, I think, 3 1/2 hours. Next time (date not yet decided), I'll try to increase the distance, going from the Battery to Spuyten Duyvil. And, if that goes well, even greater distances in the future.
Thanks again for your comment.

I say hang out near the last 3 miles of the walk and then join the remaining few. Actually, it might be interesting to be there for the end of the walk to ask those that managed to complete the 32 miles what they did to train and if they view walking as a sport, transportation or both.
