BROKEN COMPASS
In The Vertical Life, Part 2 (October 12), the caption below a photo of a stone wall on Westervelt Avenue, Tompkinsville, gave the wrong directions. The wall pictured in the photo is situated north, not south, of Victory Boulevard.
Hi, Ace. Thanks for your comment.
Here as everywhere else, the developers are working overtime to plow under Staten Island's distinctiveness so as to make it as bland, faceless and anonymous as so much of the rest of America, particularly in its suburbs.
My hope is that on Staten Island's north shore, we can preserve what makes this place different from every other place in New York. The steps, stairs and pathways pictured in the four part entry 'The Vertical Life' are only one example.
I'm glad you find all this as interesting as I do.

"and she's buying a stairway too......?" Who knew that the stairways of Staten Island could be so interesting. I noticed a bunch of them simply walking back towards the ferry after coming to the end of the park/walkway and walking back on the other side of the street.
